HRWC’s CURRENT INITIATIVES
November 2022
The Conservancy is currently working on three major initiatives:
1- Closing the remaining gaps in the Walkway, which include
- Admiral’s Walk, Edgewater—lawsuit commenced
- 615 River Road, Edgewater—seeking temporary walkway during proposed development
- The Marketplace, Edgewater—adding to existing waterfront platform
- Riverview, North Bergen—seeking temporary walkway during proposed development
- Weehawken Park, Weehawken – construction of Walkway segment connecting Weehawken Park with Lincoln Harbor is imminent.
- Union Dry Dock, Hoboken—waiting for Hoboken to complete acquisition of the Union Dry Dock property
- Liberty Harbor, Jersey City—seeking temporary walkway during proposed development
Read more about details of the gaps. See a map of the gaps.
2- Creating a Special Improvement District (SID) for the Walkway in Edgewater. The SID will allow the Walkway in Edgewater to be maintained by a single entity rather than the many waterfront properties that are responsible for maintenance today. Much of the Walkway in other municipalities is already maintained by similar types of Districts.
3- Encouraging the US Army Corps of Engineers to include Weehawken, West New York, Guttenberg, North Bergen, and Edgewater in their Coastal Storm Risk Management Plan. The Plan is currently in ‘draft’ mode with comments due in Jan 2023. Inclusion in the Plan is critical for municipalities to be eligible for Federal funding. Comments from the Conservancy in Oct 2022.
