North Bergen 2013

Walk the Walkway

June 30, 2013

North Bergen, Guttenberg and West New York

On a hot humid morning, 13 Walkers, including 4 HRWC Board members met at the Watermark Condominium on River road to Walk the Walkway along the Hudson River in North Bergen, Guttenberg and West New York.

After a brief description of the Walkway plans for the adjacent undeveloped areas, I-Park in Edgewater and Riverview in North Bergen, the group headed south toward Roc Harbor.  The Walkway here has been underwater and closed for several years and was further damaged by Hurricane Sandy. The river is encroaching on the driveway and it is closed to cars.  This is a good example where a public funding plan to rebuild the bulkhead and the Walkway is needed.

The group proceeded south through PSE &G to the Watermark Restaurant. There were no restrictions as we passed the Watermark but it was evident to all that the entertainment facilities of the Watermark are in conflict with the public access to the Walkway.

Passing the Palisades Hospital we noted that the blacktop pathway that doubles as the Walkway continues to deteriorate and needs to be rebuilt.  Unfortunately, this will not be part of the new office construction planned by the Hospital. Views at Hudson Pointe is next on the Walkway and includes a terrific small park extending into the river with gorgeous views of the river to the north and south. This one of the many excellent public facilities that have been built along the length of the Walkway.

Construction of the joint North Bergen/Guttenberg park including the Walkway south of Hudson Pointe has restarted and is scheduled to  complete in late fall.

The remainder of the Walk was in West New York where the entire Walkway is completed and has been built to a common standard throughout the town. The Walkers enjoyed a flock of Canadian geese being chased along the Walkway by a border collie and a member of the Geese Police, an organization hired to disperse the geese.

The Walk ended at 11:15 at the Port Imperial Ferry Terminal where a brief discussion of plans for the Formula One race was held.

Next Walk the Walkway is July 7, 2013 in Bayonne under the Bayonne Bridge.
